Rant: I see so many folks in my neighborhood skip the wall studs when hanging heavy shelves.
They just drill into the drywall and hope it holds, but my neighbor's whole tool rack came down after six months. Should we really trust toggle bolts for anything over 50 pounds, or is finding the studs the only right way?

Man, I used to be all about those heavy duty toggle bolts for everything. I hung a giant mirror with them once and thought it was fine. Then my buddy's TV mount, the kind with the full motion arm, ripped right out of the wall one night. The drywall just crumbled. That was a wake-up call. Now I hunt for studs like my life depends on it, even if it means the shelf isn't in the perfect spot.

So your buddy's TV just decided to become a floor model? Guess that's one way to redecorate.

Yeah, that "drywall just crumbled" line got me. I had the same rude awakening with a floating shelf. Loaded it up with books, felt real proud. Next morning, it was on the floor with a wall crater. @margaretk89 is right, you just can't argue with physics. My stud finder is my best friend now, even if it beeps at me for no reason half the time. I'll take a weird shelf spot over cleaning up drywall dust any day.
