Appreciation post: That moment my garage shelf collapsed at 2 AM

I was out in the garage last Tuesday around 2 AM, trying to find a socket set for a quick brake job on my truck. Grabbed my milk crate full of old rags off the top shelf, and the whole thing came crashing down. Turns out the brackets were only held up by two drywall anchors each, and I had stuffed it with about 80 pounds of random junk. Broke a glass jar of old nails and spilled them everywhere, plus the shelf itself split in half. Spent the next hour sweeping up nails and figuring out I need to mount stuff into studs. Has anyone else had a shelf fail on them because they got lazy with anchors?

Had a buddy do the same thing with his motorcycle gear shelf. Used those plastic anchors rated for 20 pounds each and loaded it with helmets and leather jackets. Woke up to a crash around 3 AM and found his helmet crushed under a pile of heavy chains and pads. Went straight to studs after that and never looked back.

You gotta check if those drywall anchors are actually holding anything structural or just lightweight stuff. @blair_davis knows the drill - once you go straight into studs, you never go back. Those plastic anchors are basically just suggestions, not guarantees.
