Showerthought: I picked a flip phone over a smartphone back in 2010 for a whole year.

My old phone died and I had to choose between a basic flip phone for $30 or a new touchscreen that cost over $200. I went with the flip phone because I was broke and thought I didn't need all those extra features. It was fine for calls and texts, but I missed out on maps and taking decent pictures when I traveled. Anyone else try to go simple with tech and end up switching back?

I did something very similar around 2012. Money was tight, and a basic phone seemed like the smart, grown-up choice. It worked fine for a while, but I quickly realized how much I relied on a smartphone for simple things, like looking up a bus schedule or finding a new restaurant. Going back to a flip phone made me feel oddly cut off from everyday conveniences. I lasted about eight months before I saved up for a smartphone again.

Honestly, just get the cheap smartphone next time. You can find decent used ones that do all the basics without the big price tag.

What @julia92 said about feeling cut off is real, but for me the bigger surprise was the social pressure. Friends got annoyed when they couldn't send a group text or a photo, and I'd miss invites sent through apps. It wasn't just about maps, it was about being left out of the loop everyone else was in.
