Rant: My new smartwatch bricked itself during a 5k run in Denver last Tuesday.

I had to jog back to my car holding a $400 paperweight and now I'm looking at a Garmin instead, has anyone else had a Fitbit just give up mid-activity?

My old Fitbit once died halfway up a mountain and I had to use the sun's position like a caveman to guess the time. That jog back to the car sounds like a special kind of modern frustration. Garmin's been solid for me, zero surprise brickings mid-stride. Definitely made the switch after my own paperweight experience.

Read an article last week about how some fitness trackers just give up when you need them most. Your caveman sun trick is way more reliable than a dead screen on a trail. My buddy's Garmin survived a whole marathon in the rain, which sold me on the brand. Ever try using a regular watch as a backup, or is that just more junk to carry?

Honestly used to think having a backup watch was just extra weight. Then my main tracker died during a long hike and I was totally lost on timing. Now I keep a cheap digital watch in my bag, the kind you can get for like ten bucks. It weighs nothing and gives peace of mind when the fancy tech fails. That one bad experience totally flipped my view on it.
