My new smartwatch died halfway through a hike in Sedona and I had to navigate back using the sun.

I was relying on its GPS for the trail map, so when the battery went from 60% to zero in about twenty minutes, I was stuck without a route three miles from the trailhead.

That sudden battery drop from 60 to zero is a classic sign of a failing battery, especially in cold weather or with old tech. I always carry a paper map as a backup in my pack for exactly this reason. Using the sun to get your bearings is a solid old-school skill though, glad it worked out. Did you figure out what caused the watch to die so fast?

Reminds me of my phone dying right as I reached a summit, so my only photo proof was a friend's blurry picture. Makes you wonder why tech always fails at the best moments, right?

Ugh, tech really does have the worst timing sometimes.
