I used to just trust the star rating on a review site. After getting burned on a cheap tablet that died in 3 months, I started reading the 3-star reviews first. They're way more honest.

Wait, your tablet only lasted three months?

Actually, @jamiemiller, I've had mine for over a year and it's still fine. I guess it just depends on how you use the thing. Some models are definitely built better than others.

The 3-star reviews are way more honest" - yeah that's the exact sweet spot. But I'd go one step further. Sort by newest first and read the recent 3-star reviews before looking at anything else. Companies change their manufacturing over time, so a 3-star review from 3 years ago might not apply to the model they're selling now. Those older reviews can actually be misleading if the product got worse later on. It takes a few extra minutes but saved me from buying a pair of headphones that apparently had a common firmware issue last year.
