Warning: a client's 'simple' table refinish in Cincinnati turned into a week of stripping old milk paint
They said it was just a few coats of varnish, but it was actually six layers of that old chalky paint, each a different color. I went through two gallons of stripper and a full box of 80 grit paper before I even saw wood. Has anyone else had a job where the prep work was ten times worse than they told you?

Milk paint is the worst, it gets into the grain like concrete. Makes you wonder what else they're not telling you before you start.

What kind of prep work would have saved you from that mess? Did the instructions mention sealing the wood first or was it just "paint and go"?
