My kid asked why I bother fixing the old dresser when we could just get a new one from the store.

You know what's the real lesson there though? It's about showing things can have more than one life... that not everything is just made to be thrown out. Fixing it teaches patience and care in a way buying new stuff never will. That old dresser has history, and giving it more time feels better than adding to a landfill. Kinda hope my kid picks up on that someday.

My friend actually did that with an old coffee table last month, sanding it down and staining it. It took her two weekends but she was so proud. Totally get what you're saying, @lane.drew, about the history part. That table was her grandma's and now it's back in her living room.

Little trick I learned - let your kid pick out the color of the new stain or paint. Makes them feel like they're part of the project instead of watching you do boring old person stuff. My nephew got super into fixing up an old nightstand once I let him pick the handles for the drawers.
