My $80 mistake with a 'miracle' wax from a craft fair
I bought a fancy beeswax blend at a local fair last month, sold as a one-step finish for antique wood. The guy swore it would give a museum-quality shine without any prep. I tried it on a nice oak dresser I was fixing up. Not only did it leave a weird sticky film, but it also sealed in some old water stains I thought it would hide! I had to strip the whole top again, which took me an afternoon. Has anyone else been burned by a 'magic' product that promised way too much?

Ugh, I once bought a "self-cleaning" soap that proved miles54's point about prep work.

Is it really that serious though? I mean soap is soap, right? You lather it up and it gets stuff clean, self-cleaning or not. I can see if you were trying to wax a car or something, but for just washing your hands, I don't think you need to prep the surface or whatever.
