I was ready to strip a whole tabletop again until I tried a trick with a heat gun and a scraper

Had this old oak table with a finish so gummy and thick, sanding just clogged the paper instantly. Out of ideas, I grabbed my heat gun, set it on low, and held a sharp cabinet scraper at a steep angle about an inch behind the heat. The old varnish just peeled up in long, clean curls. Took me maybe 20 minutes to clear the whole top. Has anyone else used heat on a stubborn finish instead of chemicals?

Long, clean curls" from that heat gun trick totally changed my mind about stripping old finishes.

Oh man, I had the same exact moment! I was dreading stripping this old dresser, but seeing those long curls just peel up was so satisfying. It went from a chore to kind of fun.

Know that the heat gun trick works best if you keep the scraper at a real shallow angle. Too steep and you'll just dig into the wood instead of getting those nice curls. But once you find that sweet spot, it's almost meditative watching the finish lift right off. It does take some practice though, don't be discouraged if your first few tries come out choppy. Just work in small sections and you'll get the hang of it.
