Heard a chef say something about fridge organization that stuck with me
Was grabbing some bulk bins at Restaurant Depot off Lee Rd last Thursday and overheard this older chef telling a student that your fridge layout tells you if you're a recipe follower or a freestyler. He pointed to a fridge full of labeled deli containers and said that's someone who measures everything. Then he nodded at a random jumble of bags and jars and said that's someone who cooks by feel. Made me look at my own messy fridge different - so what does yours say about you?

Honestly I used to be on team "messy fridge means you're a creative cook" but this actually flips that for me. A chaotic fridge isn't about creativity it's about not knowing what you have and probably letting stuff go bad. Now I keep my basics labeled and organized but leave the random leftover jars and half-eaten veggies wherever they land so I can still freestyle without losing my mind.

A clear system for the high-rotation stuff like eggs, dairy, and produce saves you from the tragedy of finding a moldy lemon behind the ketchup. Let the jumble zone be for things that don't expire quickly or that you're actively trying to use up in the next day or two. It's the middle ground that actually works, because pure chaos just leads to wasted food and a bad mood every time you open the door.

Whoa, I gotta disagree here. I think giving half your fridge a free pass to be messy just means you'll have the same problem but in a smaller space. The stuff you're calling "jumble zone" items still get lost and forgotten if you don't have some kind of basic rule for them. I just keep one shelf for "eat this first" and everything else has a general spot based on what it is. It's more about having a simple habit than a complicated system.
