Rant: Bought a $40 custom playmat for our group and it was a total waste.
Everyone says they're a must-have, but it just made setup slower and we argued more about where to put drinks. Has anyone else found a good way to protect a table that doesn't get in the way?

Forget the custom mat, that sounds like a headache. The vinyl tablecloth idea from the_robin is cheap and easy to wipe down, but doesn't it slide around and bunch up during a game? I've had that happen. We ended up buying a roll of that non-slip shelf liner from the dollar store and cutting pieces to fit under our regular tablecloth. It grips the table and keeps everything in place without any fuss.

Ever try just using a cheap vinyl tablecloth?

Agree with xena that non-slip liner is a game changer (we use it too). But gotta gently correct something - that shelf liner stuff is usually pretty cheap, like a buck or two at the dollar store not a roll, you know? Sometimes people grab the bigger rolls at the hardware store and that's way more than you need. We cut up a single sheet from the dollar store and it lasts for months, covers our whole gaming table without any bunching or sliding.
