My brother told me to never play Monopoly with our cousin Mark

He said Mark gets way too competitive and it ruins the vibe, but I thought he was just being dramatic. Last Friday we played and Mark bought Boardwalk and Park Place, then spent the next hour making insane deals and gloating every time someone landed there. The game dragged on for like 3 hours and two people just quit. I should have listened lol. Anyone have a story about a game night tip that saved you from a bad time?

Mark sounds like the best part of that game night. A three hour Monopoly game with real stakes and deal making is what the game is meant to be. Your brother calling it a ruined vibe just means he wanted a quiet, boring time where nothing happens. Those insane deals are how you actually play to win, not just pass the time. People who quit just could not handle a real challenge. I wish I had a cousin who brought that much fire to the table.

Exactly, that's the whole point of the game. @the_kim gets it. The best Monopoly games I've had always end with someone making a crazy trade, like giving up two railroads for a full set of oranges, and then coming back to win. That tension is what makes it fun. If you're not trying to wheel and deal, you're just rolling dice and moving pieces.
