We swapped to a different parting sand for a big iron gear job

The new stuff was way finer than our usual brand, and it actually gave us a cleaner surface finish on the castings. I think it packed tighter in the mold. Anyone else seen a big change just from switching sands?

Oh man, for sure. We had a job go from constant surface pitting to nearly perfect just by trying a different binder system. It was a night and day difference, like the mold face just held its shape better. Totally changed how we spec sand for thin wall stuff now. Sometimes the small change is the whole game.

Remember my buddy had this awful veining problem on a gear housing. Switched from a phenolic to a furan binder, and it was like magic, the sand just locked in place. Wesleyburns, it makes you realize how much the binder actually does, right? They didn't even change the grain size, just that one swap fixed everything.

So you're saying the binder was the real key?
