Watching a pour at the old Grafton foundry made me ditch my old ladle angle

The foreman there kept his spout almost flat against the lip, and I saw way less slag get into the mold. Anyone else pick up a trick like that from an old-timer on a site visit?

I saw a guy in Toledo who could read a shake roof's age just by the sound of his boots on it. He called it "listening for the crunch." I felt like a real rookie that day, because I'd been judging them by sight for twenty years. It's a good reminder that there's always a better way to do things if you keep your eyes and ears open. That old hand probably saved me from a few nasty surprises over the years. Funny how the simplest tricks are the ones that stick with you the longest.

Ever tried to guess a roof's age by smell? I got a nose full of moss and regret last time.

Guess my method is just sniffing for that special "wet dog and broken dreams" scent.
