Update: Our shop switched to a new ceramic foam filter for iron castings last quarter.

We ran a side by side test on a batch of 500 manhole covers, and the scrap rate from inclusions dropped from 8% to under 2%. Everyone says the new filters are a waste of money, but the numbers don't lie, right? What specific quality control step in your process made a bigger difference than you thought it would?

Honestly, that's a huge drop, not a waste at all.

Spilled a full pot of chili once and still mourn the loss.

Tell you what, I once dropped a whole gallon of milk in the parking lot. The splash zone was impressive, but my shoes were not happy. So yeah, I'm an expert on what counts as a real waste.
