Question about the dust from the old smelter by my kids' school

I'm worried it's not safe, but the company says their filters are fine.

Remember the lead pipes they said were fine too?

Used to believe companies when they said things were safe. Then my cousin worked at a plant that said the same thing about their filters. He saw them turn the systems off at night to save money. Now I don't trust a word they say, especially with a school right there. Those filters only work if they're running all the time and actually maintained.

Yeah, that's the thing, right? It's all about the follow through. They can have the best filters in the world on paper, but if nobody's checking them or they're just shut off, it's all for show. My old neighbor worked at a place that would skip the weekly safety checks for months at a time, then scramble to fake the logs when inspectors were due. Makes you wonder how many places are just crossing their fingers and hoping nothing goes wrong.
