Finally got the hang of reading the iron's color for the right pour temp, after burning through three test batches last month.

My foreman just gave me a nod and said 'you got it' when I called the tap on a gray iron pour yesterday, which felt better than any paycheck (well, almost).

Getting a nod is nice, but it's a pretty low bar. That's just basic job competence, not a real achievement. Relying on color alone seems risky without a pyrometer to back it up. Those three test batches you burned were a real cost to the shop.

You know, I used to believe that too. I figured a nod was just part of the job and color was good enough. Watching those test batches burn up made me see the real cost, like you said. Now I see that getting it right the first time is the actual win, not just avoiding a mistake. Having the right tool to check takes the guesswork out completely. What made you start paying closer attention to that stuff?

Those three test batches you burned were a real cost" man, that hits close to home. I've got a blackened hunk of metal on my bench right now that laughs at me every time I walk past. At this point I'm pretty sure my pyrometer is just a fancy guilt dispenser.
