TIL a $5 thrift store camcorder changed how I see found footage movies
I picked up a beat-up Sony Handycam at a garage sale last weekend for 5 bucks just to mess around with, and after watching the footage back I finally get why these movies look so real. The way the autofocus hunts and the microphone picks up every little breath and shuffle actually makes you feel like you're there, not like a professional film crew is hiding behind the couch. Has anyone else had a cheap camera or even just a phone recording change how you watch these movies?

Cheap gear just forces you to work with its flaws, and that's way more real.

yeah i totally feel you on that. i got this old beat up guitar that cost me like $50 at a pawn shop and it buzzes on the low E string if i dont hold it just right. but honestly that forces me to play cleaner and really pay attention to how i finger stuff. its not about the gear looking pretty or having all the fancy bells and whistles, its about making the music work with what you got. ive seen kids with thousands of dollars worth of stuff sound so flat cause they rely on the gear to do the work for them. cheap stuff teaches you the real fundamentals cause you gotta fight for every good note. plus theres something nice about not worrying if a scratch or dent happens, you just keep playing.
