Bought a fake ghost hunting kit on Amazon for $35

Tbh I was looking for something to add a little extra creep to my found footage project and I fell for one of those 'spirit box' knockoffs. Thing was just a cheap AM radio with a sticker on it, no actual scanning or anything useful. The EMF meter part didn't even light up half the time. Has anyone else gotten burned on cheap gear from online marketplaces?

...and the worst part is the static on the AM radio actually made my actors laugh instead of look scared. I ended up just recording an old air conditioner hum and layering it with some random noise from a free app, got way better results for zero dollars. If you want a real cheap trick, grab one of those old school cassette voice recorders from a thrift store and run the mic near a computer fan with a blanket over it. Sounds way more like real EVP than that plastic junk.

That's the thing with audio design in general, the "real" sounds are almost always just everyday stuff manipulated in clever ways. @margaret_singh1 is spot on about thrifted recorders too, the cheap old tech has a warmth that digital filters can't fake.
