What's with the vinegar in my grandma's handwritten pie recipe?

Going through her old cookbook, I found a note to add a spoon of vinegar to the crust mix, and I can't figure out why (it must be an old secret).

Why do old recipes have such clever, mysterious ingredients?

Man, @zaranelson, they're just little kitchen inside jokes...

Found a cake recipe in my mom's 1950s cookbook that lists 'a cup of strong coffee' but doesn't say if it's brewed or instant. Totally get what you mean, @zaranelson, old recipes are full of these weird hints. I once spent an hour figuring out what 'a knob of butter' meant because it wasn't measured. They assume you just know these things, which is kinda charming but also frustrating lol. It's like a secret code from another time.
