Tried to make my great-grandma's soda bread from a faded recipe card. It turned into a brick in my oven in Galway.

That "brick in my oven" is a classic soda bread fail. Did the recipe card mention anything about buttermilk or handling the dough super lightly?

My first soda bread came out like a cement block. I used to mix it like regular bread dough. Then I watched my grandma make it once. She barely touched the stuff, just stirred until it looked shaggy. Total game changer. Now mine actually rises and tastes good.

Ugh, @cameronrivera is right, overworking that dough is a surefire way to bake a doorstop.
