Tbh I spent $60 on 'authentic' sourdough starter that was just regular yeast
Found out after a month of flat loaves, my grandma's old recipe book had the real method for free. Anyone have a reliable source for truly forgotten bread starters?

My local library had a community cookbook from 1974 with a rye flour starter method. I used to buy the dehydrated packets, but that old book's process gave me the most active, sour culture I've ever had. It just needed flour, water, and a warm spot by the fridge for about five days.

My buddy found a similar thing in his grandma's kitchen, a handwritten note for a starter from the 60s. He said it worked way better than any modern guide he tried, just a simple mix left on the counter.

Wait, it only took five days from scratch?
