My grandma's 'lost' bread recipe was a total flop

I found her old notebook with a recipe for 'war bread' from the 1940s. It used potato water and no yeast. I followed it exactly, but the loaf came out dense as a brick. I think the problem was the flour we have now is different from back then. Has anyone else had trouble making old recipes work with modern stuff?

What did you expect from a recipe called war bread? That stuff was made to survive bombings, not taste good. Maybe try using it as a doorstop instead.

Yeah, @the_robin has a point about the doorstop idea. I tried making it once and it was like chewing on a brick. What saved it for me was toasting a slice until it was totally dry, then grinding it up in the blender. I used that powder to thicken a stew instead of flour. It worked and you couldn't taste it at all.
