I saw a wedding in Portland where the florist used way too much baby's breath
It was at the Crystal Ballroom last month, and the whole arch looked like a cloud of filler. I think they used maybe 70% baby's breath to 30% actual focal flowers. It made the whole design feel cheap and washed out, even though the roses were probably expensive. Has anyone else had to talk a client out of overusing filler like that?

Baby's breath can actually suck the life out of other flowers, emery_lane. It pulls water from the vase faster than the focal stems, so those expensive roses wilt quicker. Seen it ruin a whole centerpiece by noon because the filler hogged all the water.

That "cloud of filler" look is so disappointing, especially when you know the good flowers are lost in it.

I read somewhere that baby's breath releases a chemical that actually makes other flowers close up faster, like it triggers their wilting response. That combined with the water hogging thing makes it such a risky choice for weddings where you need everything to last through dinner. Saw a blog post from a florist in Seattle who said she refuses to mix it with anything expensive because she's seen too many sad, drooping centerpieces by 4 PM.
