A homeowner in Phoenix called my floor 'clicky' and it made me fix my prep work
They said it felt and sounded hollow under their feet in the main hall. I went back and checked, and sure enough, I had missed a low spot about the size of a dinner plate. I now use a 6-foot straightedge on every single job before I even think about laying the first plank. Anyone else have a good trick for finding those sneaky dips fast?

Ever try the old golf ball trick? Roll one across the subfloor and listen for the change in sound. It finds those little hollow spots your straightedge might skate right over.

Man, I feel that. I once had a guy say his new floor sounded like a popcorn machine when his dog walked across it. Turns out I missed a whole row of staples poking up. My pride was more flat than that subfloor by the time I was done fixing it. The golf ball trick is smart, I'll have to try that. Anything's better than finding out from a confused customer after the fact.

But is it really that big a deal? I mean, a few hollow spots or a staple here or there. Most people put down a pad and their actual flooring, and they have furniture and rugs. That stuff hides a lot. Are we overthinking a problem that gets covered up anyway?
