Wasted $40 on a fancy carbon fork that didn't fit my frame.

Bought a used carbon fork off some guy on Craigslist thinking it'd save weight on my fixed gear build but the steerer tube was 10mm too short and now it's just sitting in my closet, anyone else ever buy parts without measuring first?

Did you check if the fork has any steerer tube left inside the crown race? Sometimes people cut them too short and don't leave enough room for the headset. I've seen a few carbon forks where the steerer was actually fine but the crown race was sitting too high, making it look like the tube was too short. Might be worth pulling it apart and measuring again with the headset parts stacked up.

Drilled mine out once to find the same thing, the race was sitting proud and eating up all my stack height. I stacked every headset part in order on the bench, fork upside down, and measured with a caliper before I even touched the star nut. Turned out the lower bearing was chamfered wrong too, so it wasn't seating all the way down. Easiest fix was swapping to a headset with a shorter compression ring, gained like 4mm back. Wish I'd done that before I panic-cut the steerer, since now I'm running a ton of spacers just to feel normal.
