Guy at the track told me my chain tension was trash...

Some old head at the Velodrome in Denver stopped me mid lap and said my chain was so loose it was gonna skip and throw me over the bars. He showed me how to check it by pressing down on the top run... should only move about half an inch. I had like 2 inches of play before. Tightened it up right there and my pedaling felt way more solid on the next ride. Has anyone else gotten roasted by a random fixie veteran and actually learned something?

Isn't it funny how the best advice usually comes from someone who doesn't have to give it?

Have you ever noticed how people who aren't deep in your situation can see things way clearer than you can? I had this with my car breaking down once, and my buddy who barely knew anything about engines just said "try checking the battery cables" and it worked. They don't have all the stress and emotions you do, so their brain can just focus on the problem. It's like they're outside the bubble looking in while you're stuck in the middle of it all. Honestly that kind of advice hits harder because it comes from a place of actually wanting to help, not from some need to prove they're right. Feels more genuine, you know?
