Vent: My neighbor's deck collapse in Cincinnati last spring changed how I check my own.

The ledger board was attached with just nails, no lag bolts, and it pulled right off the house. What's your go-to method for inspecting a deck's structure?

Honestly, is that a common failure? My deck's been fine for years and I never check it.

Never check it" is wild to me. That's like saying you never check the brakes on your car because they've been fine. Decks rot from the inside out, so by the time you see a problem, it's already bad. You're playing a risky game.

My neighbor's deck collapsed last summer during a barbecue. The inspector said the support posts were completely rotted where they met the ground. You really can't see that stuff from the top.
