Question about fixing a vintage fan from my grandma's attic

I was ready to toss it after the motor just buzzed, but a guy at the hardware store in Springfield said to try oiling the bushings with 3-in-1 oil first. It actually worked, and now it runs quiet. Anyone know a good way to clean old cloth cords safely?

My uncle used to wrap old cloth cords in a towel soaked with a little white vinegar and baking soda. It loosens the grime without making the cord too wet. Just let it air dry for a day before you plug it in.

That's a solid tip from your uncle, @david_henderson6. I've used a similar trick with just a damp cloth and a tiny bit of dish soap for the greasy film on old appliance cords. The vinegar idea for tougher grime is smart.

That "a guy at the hardware store" saving the fan speaks to how often the simplest fix is right under our noses, not some big secret.
