My dad's old trick for a sticky garage door actually worked

For years he told me to just rub a bar of soap on the metal tracks instead of buying special lube. I always thought it was a weird old hack that wouldn't last. Last month my door started grinding again, and I finally tried it with a plain white bar. It's been smooth and quiet for over six weeks now, no special spray needed. I guess sometimes the simple fixes from before all the fancy products are still the best. Has anyone else had a stubborn door or drawer slide that an old household item fixed?

Huh, soap always left a weird gunk buildup for me. I switched to a dry silicone spray years ago and it just works better.

Totally get that, the soap gunk is the worst. I had the same nasty film on everything and it drove me nuts. Made the switch to a silicone based lube too and it was a total game changer. Stuff just glides now with zero residue, never going back.

@faithb78 See, I actually had the opposite experience with silicone lube. Made everything greasy and slick in a bad way. Hard to clean off my hands and left this weird coating on my gear. Tried a solid wax based lube instead. No residue at all. Just a smooth glide that fades evenly. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
