Watched a demo of a field app at a coffee shop and noticed something weird
I was at a Starbucks in Austin last week and saw a sales guy showing off this field management software to a contractor. The app looked smooth but he kept skipping over the scheduling part real fast. It made me wonder why so many of these tools have clunky calendars that don't sync with real time changes. Has anyone else noticed that scheduling is the weak spot in most field software?
I gotta call out that part about "clunky calendars that don't sync with real time changes." That's exactly it. Most of these field apps put all their effort into the flashy map views or the invoice templates because those look good in a demo. But the scheduling engine is where the real work happens, and it's usually held together with tape and prayers. A calendar that can't handle a last minute cancellation or a crew swap in real time is basically useless in the field. I've seen contractors lose whole afternoons because the app showed a tech as free when he was actually stuck on a job. It's the boring stuff that breaks first.
Three missed jobs last week because our "realtime" calendar updated faster on a sundial. @ellis.victor nailed it - they polish the dashboard but the engine is duct tape and dreams.
