Customer told me my estimates looked sloppy and he was right
Had a guy call me out last month on a bid for a flat roof in Portland. He said my line items were confusing and he couldnt tell where materials ended and labor started. I was just used to writing them the same way my old boss did. Spent a weekend rebuilding my whole template in Jobber so each section is separate with totals. First estimate I sent out with the new format landed me a $4,200 job the next day. Anyone else had to redo their whole quoting style because of one honest comment?
Have you read that study about how customers process estimates differently based on how they're laid out... I saw something about it on a contractor forum last week. Apparently people want to see materials broken out from labor so they know exactly what they're paying for. That flat roof job sounds like a good win though... sometimes the hard feedback is the stuff that actually helps you level up. I redid my whole plumbing estimate format after a guy told me he couldn't tell if I was charging him for copper pipe or just pulling numbers out of thin air.
