Rant: I was wrong about throwing out cloudy ferments

I always thought cloudy brine meant my pickles were ruined. Learned it's often just yeast doing its thing, and they taste great. When did you stop worrying about how your ferments look?

Oh man, my buddy almost threw out a whole jar of sauerkraut last month because it looked so murky. He sent me a panicked picture, sure it had gone bad. I told him to just taste a little bit first... and he was shocked. It was honestly some of the best, tangy kraut he'd ever made. He felt so silly for almost dumping it over how it looked. Really goes to show you can't judge a ferment by its jar.

But honestly how often does that really happen? Most people I know would just toss questionable looking food without a second thought. Seems like a weird thing to get that deep about.
