Am I the only one who thinks people overcomplicate their airlock setups?
Saw a guy at the local homebrew shop in Boise buying three different fancy valves and a custom blow-off tube for a simple gallon of mead. That's just asking for leaks and a mess. I've done over 50 batches with the basic S-shaped airlock, never had a problem. Why spend $30 on gear when a $5 piece works fine? Anyone else keep it simple?

Same pattern shows up everywhere, people think spending more money means better results when half the time it just makes things more complicated. Seen the same thing with people buying expensive espresso machines when a $20 stovetop pot makes coffee just as good, right?

Read a blog post once where a guy argued fancy gear just gives you more points of failure. He said if your basic airlock works, adding valves and tubes is like putting racing stripes on a grocery getter. Makes sense to me. Why fix what isn't broken? That Boise guy probably watched one too many YouTube videos about "pro setups.
