Watched a crew in my town set posts without checking for buried lines first

They just started digging near a property corner, and I know for a fact there's a gas line marked about two feet over from where they were. Has anyone else seen this kind of risky shortcut lately?

That's a good way to get a free fireworks show you didn't ask for. Saw a landscaper do something similar last month, just driving those thin metal edging stakes right into the ground near a marked cable line. Makes you wonder if the cost of a call to 811 is really more expensive than, you know, not blowing up the whole block.

Totally agree. Watched a neighbor try to plant a small tree without calling. Hit a gas line with the auger. Whole street got evacuated for hours. Fire department, gas company, the whole show. Just pure stupidity. Takes five minutes to make the call and avoid a disaster.

Pure stupidity" is right. I'm so paranoid about hitting a line I'd probably call 811 to plant a daisy. @the_richard, a free fireworks show sounds about as fun as a root canal.
