Just finished a job in Phoenix where we swapped from 4x4 posts to 6x6 for a 100-foot run

The difference in stability after that first monsoon season was huge, no wobble at all. Anyone else in a windy area find the extra cost for beefier posts is worth it?

That "no wobble at all" claim is a bit much. I've seen plenty of 6x6 posts get rocked in high winds, especially if the footings aren't deep enough. In my experience, the money is better spent on bigger concrete bases or better bracing. A bigger post won't fix a weak foundation.

Oh man, @noahbaker is totally right about the foundation being key. I watched a neighbor's whole deck shift because they skimped on the concrete. Going up to an 8x8 post just gives you a heavier thing to wobble if the base is bad. Honestly, bracing makes a huge difference too, like a proper diagonal knee brace. It's all about tying it together solidly from the ground up.

Bigger posts just hide bad footings till a real storm hits.
