Heard a guy in Phoenix say he never uses a level on chain link posts anymore
He was telling his buddy that after setting over a thousand posts, he just sights them by eye against a known straight line, like a building edge. Said he saves about 15 minutes per job and his lines are just as true. I tried it on a 50 foot run last Thursday and honestly, it worked fine. Does anyone else skip the level for certain fence types or is that just asking for trouble?

My uncle tried that method once and now his fence looks like a roller coaster track. Sure, you might save fifteen minutes, but you'll spend an hour later explaining to the client why their new fence waves at the neighbors. It's the kind of shortcut that works until the day your eyes are tired and you create a modern art installation instead of a property line.

That story about sighting posts reminds me of a roofer I knew. He would eyeball shingle lines from the ground after a while, said his speed went way up. Makes you wonder how much of this trade is just built up feel in your hands and eyes after doing it for years. But then again, you only hear about the times it works, not the callbacks. Guess it depends on if you're willing to bet your reputation on being that good every single time.
