Talking to my neighbor's kid about his school uniform changed how I see pockets

He's 8 and goes to Lincoln Elementary, and he told me he has to carry his phone in his backpack because his uniform pants have fake pockets. He said 'they look like they should work but they're just for show'. It made me think about how often we design things to look a certain way without thinking if they actually function for the person wearing them. Has anyone else designed something where the look and the real use didn't match up?

My old work pants had the same fake pocket problem, it drove me nuts.

Fake pockets are the worst, @derek_burns87.

My buddy Greg bought a fancy rain jacket last year that had about twelve different zippers on it. He got caught in a downpour and realized half of them were just sewn-on decorations, not actual vents or pockets. He was soaked and fumbling with a fake zipper pull while his keys got wet in a real pocket two inches away. It felt like the designer just really liked the look of zippers.
