Overheard a student say fashion design is just drawing pretty dresses
Was at a coffee shop near Parsons last month. Two students behind me were talking. One said fashion design is just art for people who can't paint real pictures. That got under my skin. Design is about construction, fabric behavior, fit adjustments. I spent 4 hours last week adjusting a single sleeve cap curve. Has anyone else dealt with people thinking this is all just sketches and pretty colors?

Did they even know what a sleeve cap is before you told them?

I mean, I barely know what a sleeve cap is myself half the time (and I've been sewing for years now). Had to look it up again just the other day when I was fixing an old shirt, which is pretty embarrassing for someone who claims to know what they're doing. So yeah, I'm probably the last person who should be judging anyone else's sewing vocabulary.

Two years ago I watched a neighbor spend three hours arguing with a contractor about crown molding terms, and neither of them knew what they were actually talking about. It's like how everyone pretends to know the exact names for things until someone calls them out on it. @fox.jesse brings up a good point actually because half the time people are just repeating terms they heard without really understanding them. You see it all the time on job sites where someone will throw around words like "miter" or "bevel" but can't show you the difference. It's nothing to be embarrassed about honestly, most of us are just making it up as we go along anyway. The people who act like they know everything are usually the ones who know the least.
