My favorite sewing machine needle broke mid-project at 2 AM

I was working on a velvet gown for a client in Austin last night and my Schmetz needle snapped right through the fabric. It was a size 14 and I think the tension was off since I switched to a thicker thread. Has anyone had luck with a specific brand for heavy fabrics?

Started using a microtex needle for velvet and never looked back. The thinner point slides between the fibers instead of bashing through them. Saved me a bunch of snapped needles.

Does the microtex also help with those weird crushed nap marks from the iron?
