My aunt said my designs looked 'too clean' for the local scene
She was talking about the art market in Asheville, and it made me realize my palette is way too safe. How do you add more grit without it looking forced?

Too clean" is the same feedback I get on my cooking sometimes.

But what if clean is the point? Some art needs that sharp, polished look to work right. Not everything has to feel handmade and gritty.

Yeah, like leet32 said, it's a real thing. Try messing with textures before you even start the final piece. Roll a dirty roller over your canvas, or scan in some crumpled paper and layer it under your colors. Asheville stuff has that handmade feel, right? So let some mistakes stay in. A rough pencil line you didn't fully erase, or a drip of paint you didn't clean up. That's the grit.
