The empty stall at the old livery stable got me thinking.

I pass the old livery stable each morning on my cleaning rounds. Back when I was a kid, a farrier named Joe had his shop there. You could see him at the forge, making shoes for all the local carriage horses. These days, the stable is quiet, and most folks use pre-made shoes from a supply catalog. It's not the same as watching a custom fit. I miss the craft that used to be part of daily life here. Do you all see similar shifts where you are?

That handmade touch is gone. My uncle was a farrier, but he retired with no replacement. Everything comes from a factory now.

Makes you wonder what other knowledge retired with those old timers.

There was a clockmaker in my town who knew all the old tricks... He closed up shop years ago and took all that know-how with him.
