Saw a horse at the county fair with some really odd shoe wear

It was a big Belgian in the draft pull, and the inside edge of both front shoes was worn down almost to the nails. What would cause that kind of pattern?

Bet the horse is pacing or traveling with a slight twist in its stride. @the_michael hit it right about hard surfaces making things worse, but I'd check the hoof angles first. A crooked foot often shows up as that inside wear before the nails get exposed.

Worn down almost to the nails" sounds like that horse is doing some serious cornering. Probably practicing for the county fair demolition derby. That's one way to win the draft pull.

My cousin's farrier mentioned seeing this exact wear pattern on a horse that was pulling a heavy wagon on pavement all day. The constant hard surface friction just grinds the hoof down way faster than dirt or grass. Makes you wonder if that horse needs different shoes or maybe less road work. What kind of surface do you think causes the most wear?
