I finally got told off by an old timer about how I was trimming fronts too short

I had a client in Lexington call me out last month for leaving her mare's front feet too short. She said the horse was sore on gravel and that I was trimming for looks, not soundness. I switched to leaving the toe a bit longer and taking more off the heels instead. Any other farriers run into this and change their approach?

Man I got told the SAME thing last year and felt like a total idiot. Now I leave a little more toe and let the heels drop a bit, horses seem way happier on hard ground.

Leaving more toe and letting heels drop is a recipe for getting a horse sore on hard ground, not helping them. All that extra length just puts more leverage on the hoof and can cause bruising or even a flare. Vets told me that's the exact opposite of what you want for a horse built for speed.
