My grandma insisted I use lard in her biscuit recipe and I finally tried it

She always said the texture would be flakier than with butter, but I thought it was just an old-fashioned thing. I made a batch last weekend with the lard she mailed me from her farm in Kentucky, and the biscuits were completely different, way lighter. Has anyone else had a family cooking tip they doubted that turned out to be totally right?

My grandpa swore by bacon grease for his cornbread. Tried it once and now I'm a convert.

My dad puts mayo on grilled cheese instead of butter.

My friend's mom used to do that with mayo on the outside of the bread before frying. I thought it was so weird until she made me one. The crust got this perfect, crispy crunch that butter never quite gave it. She said it was because of the oil in the mayo. I still use butter out of habit, but I have to admit, hers was really good.
