My cousin tried to 'improve' our great grandma's biscuit recipe last Thanksgiving

She swapped the lard for coconut oil and added rosemary, saying it was 'healthier and more modern'. The biscuits came out flat and tasted weird, like sweet soap. I quietly made a second batch the old way with the lard and buttermilk, and everyone ate those instead. Has anyone else had a family recipe get messed with like that?

Used to think swapping ingredients was no big deal until my aunt tried to "update" her meatloaf with turkey and quinoa. That thing turned into a dry, crumbly brick nobody would touch. Some recipes are perfect just the way they are.

Ugh, I saw a whole article about that exact thing.

Remember my mom trying to make brownies with applesauce instead of oil. Tasted like wet cardboard, honestly. Some swaps just kill the whole point of the dish.
