Found out my grandma's banana bread recipe has a secret cup of mayo in it

I went through her old recipe box last weekend and saw '1 cup mayo' listed under ingredients for her famous banana bread. I thought it was a typo or a joke. Google confirmed it's a real thing that makes it super moist. Tried a small batch and I'm honestly mad at how good it turned out. Has anyone else found a weird ingredient in a family recipe that they actually kept using?

I totally get that shock, finding "1 cup mayo" in a grandma recipe would throw me off too. But hey, if it works that well, maybe the secret's worth keeping, right?

Right, that plain yogurt swap sounds like a good fix if the mayo tang is too much.

Oh man, I gotta respectfully disagree on this one. I actually tried the mayo trick a few years back after seeing it in an old church cookbook. In my experience, it gives the bread a weird tang that overpowers the banana flavor. I ended up tossing the whole loaf. Your mileage may vary of course, but I swapped back to plain yogurt for moisture and never looked back.
