Am I the only one puzzled by the unwavering loyalty to certain ingredients in family cooking?
Honestly, my aunt's casserole falls apart without one specific soup. Tbh, I don't get why we can't swap it out.

Have you tried making a small batch with a swap to see if anyone notices? I changed the soup in my family's casserole once, and no one knew until I told them. Sometimes the memory matters more than the ingredient.

Oh man, this is such a good point. Mark's idea to just try it is spot on, because the memory IS in the eating together, not just one can of soup. Felix is right that the original tastes like childhood, but childhood recipes changed all the time based on what was cheap or in the cupboard. Our brains smooth it all into one warm feeling. If the new version still makes everyone gather and smile, you kept the real magic.

Come on, those ingredients are the whole point. That specific soup probably tastes like childhood and family holidays to people. Why mess with a good thing that makes everyone happy?
