That $200 water filter system ended up being a money pit for my family of 5

I bought a whole-house water filter for $200 off Amazon last spring (you know, to save on bottled water). It worked great for like 3 months, but then the sediment cartridge started clogging every 6 weeks. Replacements are $40 each, so I've spent $160 in filters already. Has anyone else dealt with these cheaper systems just costing more in the long run?

Replacing the sediment cartridge every 6 weeks sounds like your water supply has a lot of sediment, which the filter is catching. The factory default on most of those whole house systems is actually 3 months before the first clog, but if your water is that dirty your real problem might be a pre-filter or a bigger sediment issue. Spending $200 on a filter plus $160 in replacements still adds up to less than a year of bottled water for a family of 5, so you aren't totally losing here.

That 3 month default timeline you mentioned @grantl94 is actually really useful because it gives people a baseline to compare against. If someone's burning through a sediment filter every 6 weeks, that's got to be twice as fast as normal, so something's off. I'm wondering though, have you ever tested your water to see exactly what kind of sediment is in there? Sand, silt, or rust from old pipes can all clog differently, and knowing that might help you pick a better pre-filter or at least understand why it's happening so fast. Otherwise you're just throwing money at replacement cartridges without fixing the root cause, which is what really sucks.
